Dream Theater haben es schon immer verstanden, eingängige Melodieläufe mit progressiver Gitarrenarbeit und harten, stellenweise aggressiven Parts zu einem unverwechselbaren Mix zu verbinden. Sie haben sich damit einen Ruf erarbeitet, der in der Hard Rock Szene seinesgleichen sucht, und ihr Name steht stellvertretend für Virtuosität, Ästhetik und unglaubliches Talent.
Während die Welt um sie herum in wirtschaftlicher, spiritueller und politischer Hinsicht langsam zu bröckeln beginnt und auf ein unsicheres Schicksal zusteuert, nutzen Dream Theater die bandinternen Veränderungen um mit A Dramatic Turn of Events ein zukunftsorientiertes, karriereprägendes Album zu erschaffen. Ähnlich wie auf so wichtigen Werken wie Images and Words und Scenes from a Memory enthält die aktuelle Platte atmosphärische Soundlandschaften, die sogar noch mehr Raffinesse beinhalten als ihre Vorgänger.
Auch mehr als fünfundzwanzig Jahre nach ihrer Gründung und mit ihrem mittlerweile elften Studioalbum sind Dream Theater nach wie vor eine der bedeutendsten und prägendsten Bands ihres Genres.
Als Produzent für A Dramatic Turn of Events fungierte Gitarrist John Petrucci selbst, für den Mix war Soundgenie Andy Wallace (Nirvana, Prince, System of a Down) zuständig.
„I'm ecstatic with the way the album came out“ verkündet James LaBrie, dessen Stimme eines der wichtigsten Merkmale des typischen Dream Theater Sounds ist. „It's the album we had to make. I think we've once again touched on what in the earlier years gave us our originality and our identity. We infused definitive styles that were predominant in our music: the progressive end and the metal end, with the melodic element pretty high up on the list of priorities."
Wohl weil A Dramatic Turn of Events das Resultat einiger entscheidender Veränderungen ist, strotzen die Songs vor Energie. Dream Theater haben erneut die perfekte Balance aus Härte, Progressivität und Melodien gefunden, ohne dass sich diese Elemente gegenseitig überschatten. Fans der schnelleren Töne von Dream Theater und solche der eher melodischen Parts kommen auf diesem Album gleichermaßen auf ihre Kosten. Von Anfang an war der Band klar, dass A Dramatic Turn of Events musikalisch als auch textlich ausgewogen sein sollte, und dieses Ziel haben sie erreicht: Es ist der Höhepunkt einer von Millionen Fans gefeierten Karriere.
Schon seit ihrer Schulzeit arbeiten Leadgitarrist Petrucci und Bassist John Myung daran, ihre gemeinsame Vision wahr werden zu lassen. Durch konstantes Üben an ihrem jeweiligen Instrument legten sie den Grundstein dessen, was einst Dream Theater werden sollte. Mike Portnoy stieß während ihrer Studienzeit am Berklee College of Music hinzu, und bereits auf dem zweiten Album „Images and Words“, mit dem sie in den USA Goldstatus erreichten, war LaBrie als Sänger zu hören.
Ein weiterer Schritt in Richtung des aktuellen Line-Ups war die Aufnahme des Keyboarders Jordan Rudess für das sechste Album „Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory“.
Dank so erfolgreicher Alben wie Train of Thought 2003, aber auch dem vielfältigen Octavarium 2005 hat die Band mittlerweile weit über zehn Millionen Alben verkauft.
Nach dem Ausstieg des Langzeitdrummers, Co-Produzenten und inoffiziellen Bandsprechers Portnoy, standen Dream Theater an einem Scheideweg ihrer Karriere. Letztendlich führte der Einstieg von Mike Mangini (dokumentiert in insgesamt drei Video-Episoden) und die Tatsache, dass die übriggebliebenen Mitglieder wieder zueinander gefunden hatten, dazu, dass sie ihre Kreativität reaktivieren konnten. Die Notlage stärkte und forderte alle Persönlichkeiten und Talente innerhalb der Band, und jeder stellte sich – einzeln und als Gruppe – der Herausforderung, Dream Theater weiter nach vorne zu treiben.
„When I came upon the title A Dramatic Turn of Events, it really spoke to me as so perfect to what the content of the album is in general” erklärt Petrucci. „Most of the songs deal with some kind of major change, whether in one person’s life or the lives of many on a grand scale. Whether it be uprising that’s happening now in the Middle East or some even in history or some incredible spiritual or personal journey that somebody went on that they had to go through to get somewhere else and become a better person.”
„That theme of metamorphosis was really constant throughout the lyrics“ fährt er fort. „Not on purpose, maybe subconsciously, because of what was happening to us, that album title just fit so perfectly. ‘White elephant’ or not, it was perfect.“
Der positive Neustart mit dem neuen Bandgefüge trug sicher dazu bei, dass die wütenden Elemente, mit denen sie auf Vorgängeralben experimentiert hatten, verschwanden. „Dream Theater has always had a basis of metal mixed with prog, that's who the players are at the core, [but] over recent years we were going into the arena of being growly” sagt Rudess. „We withdrew from that a little bit. We thought about who we are - the remaining forces in the band - our personalities and where we were coming from. The music remains heavy, of course.”
„There's as much metal as there's been in the past” erklärt er weiter. „We also focused in. When we got progressive and instrumental, we took it an extra step. We've gotten a little crazier than we've done before. There are some tunes like ‘Outcry’ which is such an example of us going full tilt and turning on the progressive maximum. We had fun. The instrumental madness really comes through on that.”
Was jedoch nicht bedeutet, dass die neue Platte ausschließlich aus schnellen Hooks besteht, auch wenn sie diese bekanntlich im Genre etabliert haben, denn ein Dream Theater Album ohne großartige Melodien ist nicht vorstellbar. „I always tell young musicians that having a good technique is not about playing fast, it's about playing slow” stellt Rudess klar. „If you say someone has really great technique it's because anything they have in their musical mind can come through the mechanism that they're using. JP can express a beautiful melody lyric melody line as well as anyone else. That to me is a really good technique - It’s not always about 64th notes.”
A Dramatic Turn of Events steht für Dream Theater im Jahre 2011. Man findet progressive Elemente, ernste Inhalte („I often joke with JP about how he can't just write straight loves songs” erzählt Rudess), starke Balladen, Spielfreude und natürlich eine ordentliche Portion Härte.
„This is a top three Dream Theater album for me” stellt LaBrie fest. „There’s just something about this album that I think really touches on some of the elements on our music that really made this band shine as far back as 1992 when we released Images and Words. I think that put us on a level that was hard to ignore. I think this album solidifies that. We’re still the band we’ve always been. We’re keeping it contemporary and taking it to a whole new level. With all the body of work, this album proves we’re continuing to better ourselves and continuing to write the material we think is the best material we’ve ever written.”
Petrucci pflichtet dem bei: „The mood the songs have, the infectious nature and depth of the music, the depth of the subject matter, I think it’s going to be something of a shining light amongst a few others in our catalog for years to come. You always hope people enjoy it, you can’t predict, but I have a strong feeling that this is going to be something that our fans, and even new fans relate to on a different level.”
„We're just having a great time on the road. Everything has really come together” freut sich der Gitarrist. „To deal with the departing of one band member to finding a new one that fits in like a glove, making a great record and finally be out on tour and playing in front of people has been unbelievable. Everyone has been incredibly accepting, gracious and wonderful. I look out every night and see hands up in the air and smiles. We had a definite mission that we were on from the moments before we walked into the studio with our whole tour and upcoming album. I feel great about it. I feel like we’re in a really great headspace.”
